During 1864-1865 the provost marshal oversaw recruitment activities on behalf of the Commonwealth. Primarily this involved efforts to recruit volunteers in the southern states, crediting them to Massachusetts and its municipalities. This series consists of reports and letters transmitting reports from the assistant provost marshals in each of several recruiting districts to the provost marshal in Massachusetts.
